In 1977 Yesil Ev (an old Ottoman mansion) was up for sale and was taken under control by the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association. The old wooden building was so far beyond repair that, with the consent of the Commission for Ancient Monuments, it was demolished and rebuilt. The nineteen rooms and layout were carefully preserved and the exterior remade as an exact replica.
The furnishings have been created in the style of a 19th century winter mansion. The building has an absolutely unrivaled location between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and at the same time offers visitors the warm, friendly atmosphere of an old Istanbul home.
After the opening of this unique building in March 1984 as the Yesil Ev, it very quickly attained a world-wide reputation and was awarded in 1985 the medal for the year by “Europa Nostra”. Yesil Ev had, indeed, introduced the concept of true comfort and hygiene to this “derelict” district and opened a new epoch in Turkish tourism by combining modern standards with historical style.

"We can´t say enough good things about this small designer hotel. In a great position just up from the Hippodrome, its owners have managed to straddle the divide between sleek modernist and antique Ottoman with great success. Parquet floors, crisp white linen, marble bathrooms and gold mirrors make the smallish rooms distinctive, and the building´s marble spiral staircase and central ornamental lightwell are super classy. After enjoying the excellent breakfast, served in the downstairs kitchen with its stainless-steel bench and olive-green walls, guests often have to be encouraged to leave the building - the alternative option of sinking into one of the foyer lounge´s leather couches and enjoying a quiet read is just too tempting." From Lonely Planet´s Istanbul, 2005 edition.

Value Turkey travel from Transglobal Destinations An attendant guided me to a basin, where I was expected to sit and sweat for 15 or 20 minutes. I was wearing my bathing suit and I'd been given a plaid cotton cloth to wrap over it. I looked around the room and noticed that I was one of the more conservatively dressed women there, which surprised me because I was in a Turkish bathhouse in Istanbul, and in some parts of the city the women are almost fully covered -- with only their eyes peeking out -- in public. »Read More

Munich mayor attends reopening of Armenian church in Istanbul
ISTANBUL. – After a six-year renovation, the St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, which is located in Istanbul’s Shishli district, reopened and celebrated its first mass on Sunday.
This tower designed by award-winning firm FXFOWLE, the tallest on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, makes a memorable presence for the headquarters of a dynamic construction and development company. Occupying an "edge-city" context at the intersection of two major highways, the tower is completely freestanding and seen in the round. Functioning like an obelisk, it marks the end of long vistas and announces the entrance to the city from the east. This tower marries sculptural massing rooted in locale, a solar responsive skin with allusions to Islamic tradition, and the incorporation of green spaces throughout. Rooted in the particular spirit of Istanbul, it offers an antidote to the universal application of conventions that has regrettably become the norm for many international practices.
Istanbul's evocative skyline is set to be capped by a new peak, as architects on Wednesday unveiled plans to build a tower almost 300 meters high, which will rival the highest buildings in Europe.
